Kick-of Meeting (4-6th Nov. 2019)
The kick-of meeting of W2W for Phase 2 will take place in Eibelstadt close to Würzburg from November 4-6th 2019. All project leaders and staff will meet, some for the first time, to present their W2W projects and research plans for the coming years. The purpose of this meeting is to get to know each other and to start working together within projects, between research areas, and with the international guests to address the scientific challenges of W2W in Phase 2.
International keynote speakers and reknown scientists are invited to the meeting. Their contributions are expected to be extremely valuable and stimulating for W2W. The confirmed invited scientists are:
- Andy Brown (ECMWF)
- Juliana Dias (ESRL, NOAA, USA)
- Rupert Klein (Freie Universität Berlin)
- Susan van den Heever (Colorado State University)
- Nedjeljka Zagar (Universität Hamburg)
There will be a number of discussions dedicated to, e.g., mathematics, computing resources and data storage, and central activities such as management and outreach.
A workshop on "unconscious biases" will also be organized during the metting. In academia, unconscious biases in person perception are crucial barriers as well as challenges for successful teamwork. This workshop will provide relevant research findings about the risks of biases in personnel selection or daily communication, for instance, and will offer a training in recognizing and dealing with such biases. The participants will be invited to reflect on their own dealings with biases and stereotypes as well as to develop guidelines for a bias-aware communication in everyday academic teamwork.
A draft program of the meeting with additional information about the venue is available here (last updated on August 6th 2019).
